Blandford, or Blandford Forum, anciently called Cheping Bleneford, is a market town and parish, in the north division of its name, and hundred of Coombsditch; 104 miles from London, 22 from Salisbury, 16 from Dorchester and Poole, and 12 from Shaftesbury; situated from the centre of the north-east part of the county, on the bend of the river Stour (which flows on the north and west sides of the town), and on the great road from London to Weymouth, Exeter, Plymouth, &. The principal support of Blandford is derived from the passage of travellers, the expenditure and good neighbourhood of the surrounding gentry, its markets and fairs; and the races held annually in July or August. Till the beginning of the 18th century, fine point lace, nearly equal to that of Flanders, was made here, some of which sold as high as £30 a yard; it was before that period, famous for the manufacture of band strings; at present shirt-buttons are the only articles manufactured here, which gives employment to the females of about 270 families. The town abounds with handsome shops of every kind; and the industry of its inhabitants, joined with its local advantages of a great thoroughfare and a most respectable neighbourhood, has made its trade much superior to any Inland town of its size in the county. Blandford has suffered frequently by great fires: Camden speaks of one that took place before 1579,another happened about 1677, and in 1713 it again suffered by the like calamity; but the most serious conflagration was on the 4th June, 1731, when nearly the whole town was reduced to ashes: in 1732 an act was passed to rebuild it, when his late Majesty munificently subscribed £1,000, the Queen £200, and the Prince of Wales £100. The town gives the title of marquis to the eldest son of the Duke of Marlborough.
Blandford was anciently styled a borough; but it sent representatives to parliament only twice – in the 33rd of Edward I and 22nd of Edward III. The town is governed, under a charter granted by James I, by a bailiff and 10 capital burgesses, or common council, who have a common seal, and a serjeant at mace. The quarter sessions used to be held here in January, but are now removed to Dorchester; the county magistrates hold a petty sessions every alternate week. Here are two free-schools, and a blue-coat school for twelve boys, who are annually clothed, and at the end of three years put out apprentices. The charitable establishments in Blandford are very extensive, and reflect the highest honour on the Inhabitants. Besides the schools before – mentioned, are two alms-houses; one founded by George Ryves, Esq which supports ten poor persons, who have an allowance weekly and are annually clothed, and another, near the church, for six others. The church is an elegant modern structure, situate in the middle of the town; it is in Grecian style, with a tower 86 feet high, surmounted by a spire of 21 feet; the living is a vicarage, in the presentation of the dean and chapter of Winchester; and the present incumbent is the Rev. George William John Chard. There is a meeting- house for the independents, and a small chapel for the Roman Catholics. The country surrounding Blandford abounds with gentlemen’s seats, and comprises a beautiful variety of rich and picturesque scenery. The air is most salubrious; the dry easterly winds, and the cold northern, are tempered by the warm saline breezes wafted hither from the ocean. The market-day is Saturday; the fairs are, March 7th, July 10th, and November 8th, for cheese, cattle and sheep. Blandford town contained, by the last census, 2,643 Inhabitants.
Blandford
St. Mary is a small village, in a parish of its name, in the same division and
hundred as Blandford, about a mile west from that town. This village is only to
be noticed as having been the birthplace of the celebrated antiquary, Brown
Willis: his ‘History of Cathedrals,’ ‘Notitia Parliamentaria,’ and other
publications, are much esteemed; and his extensive collections for a history of
Buckinghamshire sufficiently evince his assiduity. The whole parish contains
about 400 Inhabitants.
Spetisbury
is a straggling village, and parish, about three miles from Blandford, in the
hundred of Loosebarrow; pleasantly situated upon the banks of the Stour. It is a
place only interesting to the antiquary, there being the remains of a perfect
Saxon encampment, within the area of which have been found many coins, and other
relics of that people. The parish contained, in 1821, 546 Inhabitants.
