Cann - a village about 2 miles S. from Shaftesbury.  The church (S.Rumbold) is in the Gothic style and was rebuilt upon the site of its predecessor in 1842.  The living is a rectory, patron the Earl of Shaftesbury, here is a Dissenting chapel and a school upon the national system.  The parish comprises nearly 1000 acres acres, and had in 1841, a population of 624

CANN, a parish adjoining Shaftesbury, and comprising a portion of the borough, in the hundred of Sixpenny Handley and union.  The church of St. Rumbold is a neat stone structure, in the Gothic style.  The living is a rectory, annual value £200, with residence, in the patronage of the Earl of Shaftesbury, and held by the Rev. William Rigden, B.A.  A National School was built in the year 1845.  Sir Richard George Glyn owns a portion of the land.  Here are quarries.  Acres 930; population in 1861 547

Cann (or Shaston St. Rumbold) is a parish adjoining Shaftesbury to the south, three & half miles south from Semley station on the Salisbury and Yeovil branch of the South Western railway, and is comprised within the Northern division of the county, hundred of Sixpenny Handley, petty sessional division, union and county court district of Shaftesbury, rural deanery of Shaftesbury (Shaftesbury portion), archdeaconry of Dorset and diocese of Salisbury.  The roads from Shaftesbury to Salisbury and Blandford pass through this parish.  The church of St. Rumbold was built upon the old site in 1840 and is a stone building in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, with square embattled western tower containing 6 bells: there is one stained east window of three lights, representing The Agony in the Garden, The Crucifixion and The Ascension, given by the late Edwin Thomas, formerly of this parish, also a monument to the late rector, the Rev. William Rigden and his son, William Gregson Rigden and other memorials to the Bowles family, all erected in the 18th century: there are sittings for 250 persons. The register dates from the year 1563. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge £186, gross yearly value £217, net £180, with residence, in the gift of the Earl of Shaftesbury, and held since 1878 by the Rev. William Darby of K.C.L. and surrogate.  Here are two Primitive Methodist chapels, which will each seat 100 persons. Market gardening is carried on here.  There are two flour mills.  Sir Richard George Glyn bart. Is the principal landowner.  The soil is sand and light loam; subsoil, green sandstone, quarries of which are worked.  The chief crops are carrots and corn.  The area is 907 acres; rateable value,£2,562; the population in 1891 was 501.

Letters through Shaftesbury, which is also the nearest money order & telegraph office, arrive at 9 & 11 am & 3pm. Wall Letter Box cleared at 5.30 & 8 pm on weekdays & 5 pm on Sundays.  
National School (mixed) with residence for mistress, was built in 1845 & enlarged in 1893, for 97 children; average attendance 97; Mrs Emma Chitty, mistress.
