Dorset Militia Ballot List for 1798

These are lists of civilians between the ages of 18 and 45 who could be chosen by ballot to serve in the militia. If chosen ,they could find a substitute to serve in their place by paying a bounty. Certain men were exempted for reasons such as age, height, disability or having a large number of children (the parish would not want to support these children if their father were killed).
