Volunteers Muster Books and Pay Lists December 1798 - December 1800
TNA Reference: WO 13/4299

Transcribed by Louise Haywood and Darren Paine

The muster books and pay lists for Purbeck can be found at The National Archives, Kew. They list name, rank, the number of days’ service, payment and, occasionally, other remarks and date from July 1798 - December 1800. The voluntary force was raised to supplement the Militia as there was a threat of French invasion. A regular NCO would be provided to train the men once a week. Not all would be provided with muskets, as there were pikes, and although the volunteers had a uniform (scarlet coat with green facings and silver buttons), it is not certain how ‘uniform’ it was. No seaman was to be enrolled.

John Calcraft called a meeting to raise a defence force for the Isle of Purbeck on 6th May 1794 at The Ship Inn, Corfe Castle, and the Purbeck Volunteer Company was gazetted on 22nd July 1794 initially with 150 men. Calcraft left the Company on 10th July 1798 to join the Dorset Militia. Captain John Cockram took over and noted in the return for the 25th July to the 24th August 1798 that as Captain Calcraft had left, the Purbeck Company was a man down, leaving only 99 men, so a new recruit, George Bartlett, had been engaged to join on the 25th August. Bartlett was discharged on 3rd November 1798 along with Thomas Wills.
