The Wreck of the ship "Welfare" off Kimmeridge 1376

Transcribed by Louise Haywood

The Calendar of Patent Rolls (Calendarium Rotulorum Patentium, Rotuli litterarum patentium) for Edward III notes on 5th September 1376 that Robert Knolles had freighted a ship called the Welfare of Dartmouth from Plymouth. It was carrying goods for London but encountered a storm off Purbeck and was wrecked at Kimmeridge. The roll lists some of the 99 names (not all) of those involved who carried away the wrecked goods and also assaulted Mr Knolles’ men and servants.
