EXTRACT FROM KELLY'S DIRECTORY OF DORSETSHIRE 1880

Hamworthy is a parish and village having a junction on the South Western railway, 121 miles from London, in the petty sessional division of East Shaston, hundred of Cogdean, union and county court district of Poole, diocese f Salisbury, archdeaconry of Dorset and rural deanery of Whitchurch second portion, situated on a peninsula in Poole Harbour and is within the town of Poole. The church of St Michael was rebuilt in 1826; much of the old material was worked up in the new; it has pointed windows, small chancel, nave, square tower with pinnacles and 2 bell; it has 300 sittings, mostly free; the edifice was re-seated in 1860. The registers date from the year 1826; those with earlier dates are not deposited in the church. The living is a rectory, yearly value £180 including 8 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Sir Ivor Bertie Guest bart. and held by Rev. Macnamara Patey B.A. of St Catherine’s College, Cambridge. Here are extensive brick and tile works, where mosaic, encaustic, tessellated, white glazed, and other decorated tiles are manufactured. Sir Ivor Bertie Guest bart. of Canford, is lord of the manor and sole land owner. The soil is loamy; subsoil, gravel and sand. The chief crops are wheat, oats and barley. The area is 1052 acres; ratable value £2664. The population in 1871 was 474.
