Shaftesbury

PIGOT & CO. TRADE DIRECTORY 1830
SHAFTESBURY & DISTRICT

Extracted from copies of the directories at Dorchester Reference Library, by Jan Genge Kennedy 2003.

Shaftesbury or the Borough of Shaston, is in Sixpenny Handley hundred; 101 miles from London, 28 from Dorchester & Poole, and 12 from Blandford; pleasantly situated on a very high hill, and its streets are thoroughfares to the towns of Wincanton, Warminster, Salisbury, Blandford and Sherborne.  This is a place of very remote origin, traditionally reported to have existed long prior to the roman invasion.  By King Alfred it was greatly enlarged and chiefly rebuilt, its site then occupying a part of the eminence now called Castle Green.  In ancient times it was much resorted to, and derived its chief celebrity from its rich monastery, which was founded here as early as the reign of Alfred:  the church was famed for containing the body of Edward the Martyr, whose shrine was the resort of an immense concourse of pilgrims, among these the illustrious name of Canute, who died here, appears most conspicuous.

This borough is governed by a mayor, recorder, and 12 capital burgesses, who are entitled to hold a court of record for the recovery of debts, every Saturday.  The Earl of Shaftesbury is lord of the manor, and holds a court annually about Michaelmas.  In the 23d of Edward I the privilege of returning members to parliament was bestowed upon the borough, and the right of voting vested in the corporation, and other inhabitants paying scot and lot, in number about 400; the mayor is the returning officer; the present representatives are Ralph Leycester and Edward Davies Davenport, Esqrs.  This is a place of no particular trade; the manufacture of shirt-buttons yields employment to may persons in the neighbourhood, but the principal establishments for receiving this article are at Blandford.  The fine wires used in making the shirt buttons are however manufactured here by several persons.

There were formerly no fewer than twelve churches in Shaftesbury; at this period there are but three, which are dedicated to the Holy Trinity, St. James, and St. Peter: the livings of St. Peter and the Holy Trinity are united, in the incumbency of the Rev. Wm. Pattison; the benefice of St. James’s is at present enjoyed by the Rev. Frederick Ricketts: the presentation to all the livings is vested in the Earl of Shaftesbury.  The other places of worship are a chapel each belonging to the Independent and Wesleyan Methodists, and a meeting-house for the society of friends.  Here are alms-houses, founded by Sir Henry Spiller, Kt. for the maintenance of 10 poor men; and others, by Mr Matthew Chubb, for the like number of poor women.  There is also a charity-school for 20 boys, founded and endowed by Mr William Lush.  The country around Shaftesbury is of an agricultural character, for the most part fertile; the views extensive, with a pleasing proportion of hill and valley scenery.  The market day is Saturday; and the fairs are, the Saturday before Palm Sunday, the 24th of June, and the 23rd of November.  According to the parliamentary returns for 1821, the population of Shaftesbury was – Holy Trinity parish 1,115; St. James’s, including part of Alcester liberty, 724; and St. Peter’s 1,064: total number 2,903.
