Wareham Town Criers

1855 - 1875 Johnathon FRAMPTON born at Gussage All Saints in 1800 son of Bryan and Elizabeth Frampton. Married Elizabeth P. PETERS at Wareham in 1833, and in 1841 was working as a baker. In the 1851 census in Wareham he is listed as Town Sergeant so may also by then be Town Crier. In 1871 he is listed as a grocer and Town Sergeant, and he died in Wareham in 1877.

1881 - 1907 ? John BRIDLE born at Worth Matravers in 1843 son of James a carpenter and his wife Mary. Married Elizabeth M. STONE at Wareham in 1865. In the 1861 census he is listed as a mason, but by 1881 was a photographer and Town Crier. In 1901 he is listed as Town Sergeant and may still be Town Crier until 1907, when his son took over. He died at Wareham in 1913.

1907 - 1939 James BRIDLE born at Worth Matravers in 1868, son of John and Elizabeth above. He married Fanny WATERMAN at Christchurch in 1905. In the 1891 census he is working as a photographer, and in 1900 / 1901 served in South Africa in the Imperial Yeomanry, but by 1911 is listed as a bill poster, whilst Kelly's Directory of 1923 confirms that he was Town Crier, Sergeant at Mace and Bill Poster. He died at Wareham in 1950.

? Thomas LANE - he asked the Council to make his temporary appointment as Town Crier permanent - Council then held a competition - he was beaten by Jacqui HALL.
