Winterborne Whitechurch

Burials 1700 - 1790

Transcribed from the original parish registers held at the Dorset History Centre in Dorchester and donated to the Dorset OPC Project by Kim Parker

Arranged according to the Gregorian Calendar, with the Julian year indicated to the left of the forward slash (/) in those years when the Julian Calendar, which ran from March 25th to March 24th, was in use (i.e. prior to 1752, 1751 being the transition year).

The first register book covering the period from 1599-1741 is much deteriorated, faded and disordered, with loose leaves sewn back in out of sequence, and sometimes even upside down. Judging by a newspaper excerpt pasted into the back, it has been subject to some form of fairly aggressive conservation:

“TO THE EDITOR OF THE STANDARD

SIR, - If the Rev. Augustus F. Tollemache, vicar of Whitwick, will brush his registers over with a solution of tannic acid and expose to the light, I think he will succeed in restoring the colour of the faded ink.

I am, Sir, your obedient servant.

A WELL-WISHER

January 30, 1880”

There are several memos in the register, including the following:

“Thomas STEPHENS of Winterbourne Whitechurch in ye County of Dorset was sworn Parish Clerk of ye Parish Church of Winterbourne Whitechurch aforesaid at ye nomination of ye Reverend Mr Edward SUTTON Vicar of Winterbourne Whitechurch aforesaid before Reverend Charles SLOPER Doctor in Divinty Chancellor of ye Diocese of Bristol May 12, 1711.”

“13-May-1750; Richard STEVENS chosen Clerk of ye Parish by Richard COBBE Vicar”

As the register is so difficult to read, researchers are advised to use this transcript as a guide only and to consult the originals at the Dorset History Centre.
