Among the many notes that left to the Dorset History centre By the Rev. is the above pedigree of one part of the Dart Family of Fordington

Background

Research suggests that we have a number of families with the surname 'DARK' migrating into Dorset from Devon during the early 18th Century. As we would expect there are various spellings of their surname with changes in spelling often occurring as the families moved parish or we had a new scribe involved. These include DART; DARTT; DARTE; DARK; DARKE etc.

'DARK' appears to be used more often in earlier records with a solid progression to 'DART'. I have not found any evidence to suggest, at least in this rather limited area of Dorset, that there are distinct and separate 'Dart' and 'Dark' families. For the sake of simplicity and consistency I will use the surname 'DART' Throughout.

A similar situation occurs with the surname 'PEDHAM' [Variations also include PERAM; PERRAM; PERREM; PERHAME; PELHAM ] but is generally recorded and known as 'PERHAM'. The difference is that families of this surname can be found in these parishes as far back as records go - a Nicholas PERHAM for example was a Burgess in Dorchester and Richard PERHAN a Bailiff in the time of Henry VIII. A Ralph PERHAM owned land in Holy Trinity and Fordington in the early 17th Century.

Turning to the Rev RG Bartelot's Pedigree shown above it starts with a William DART of Fordington who has married twice - first to a Sarah and then to a Mary.

1. William DART alias DARK (c1716-1774)
& Sarah PERHAM (d.1745/6)

The first Family

The earliest meaningful record we have is when William DART arrived in Fordington and has to quickly marry a local girl Sarah PERHAM at Stinsford on 30th May 1737. Researchers on Ancestry.com maintain that he originated from the parish of Dalwood which used to be in Dorset until an act of parliament changed it to Devon in 1842. His baptism if correct is recorded there on 12th Feb 1716 as William the son of William & Julia DARKE . Given that their first child is named Julian and we know there was a general migration in this surname from Devon I think this is quite likely to be a correct assumption. His father seems to have died in the parish in December 1748.

Sarah is already 4 months pregnant at the time of her marriage and as was traditional she returned to her home parish of Stinsford, and presumably the support of her family, to give birth. Sarah actually lived at Fordington with her husband William and she subsequently gave birth there to three more children:-

(1.1) Julian Dart (1737-NK) a daughter bap Stinsford on 23 Oct 1737. Nothing further is known.

(1.2) Jane Dart (1739-1797) (Jeney) bap Fordington 2nd Dec 1739. She appears to have remained a spinster and been buried at All Saints church in Dorchester on 19 Mar 1797

(1.3) Elizabeth Dart (1744-1830) (Betty) bap Fordington 29th Apr 1744. She married at Stinsford to William Christopher. Follow link for more information.
(1.4) James Dart (1751-1791) bap Fordington 11 Apr 1751. He was selected in the ballot for the year 1776 to serve for 3 years in the Dorsetshire Regiment of Militia when he was described as being 5'7" tall and single. It gives his age as being 23 rather than his correct age of 25 but being illiterate he was no doubt innumerate as well. He married Mary Christopher (1759-1833) on 26th Jan 1777. [Mary Christopher is the 1st cousin once removed of William shown above ] James & Mary had seven children the first four of which were all baptised at Fordington before they returned to live at Stinsford in 1787:-

(1.4.1) Mary Dart (1777-1848) she married Henry Coward at Stinsford on 27th Oct 1800 and died at Bockhampton being buried at Stinsford on 21st Apr 1848
(1.4.2) Olive Dart (1780-1823) she married George Downton at Stinsford on 29th Dec 1800 and died at Bockhampton being buried at Stinsford on 7th Nov 1823
(1.4.3) William Dart (1782-1860) he married Susannah Purchase at Stinsford on 13 Apr 1801, & raised a family of 9 children at Higher Bockhampton(2) buried at Stinsford on 9th Feb 1860
(1.4.4) James Dart (1785-1786) he died in infancy being buried at Fordington on 26th Feb 1786 shortly before the family moved to Stinsford
(1.4.5) James Dart (1788-Nk) although born in 1788 he was not baptised until the age of 5 in 1793 together his younger 4 year old brother John. Nothing else known.
(1.4.6) John Dart (1789-1846) he married Phillis Bishop (1782-1832) and raised a family of 4 children at Bockhampton before his burial at Stinsford on 1st Oct 1846
(1.4.7) Rebecca Dart (1790-1826) she had an illegitimate son Thomas in 1811 before marriage to john Cosh at Stinsford on 16th Nov 1817 for who she produced 2 more children. She died at Bockhampton and was buried at Stinsford on 9th mar 1826
James Dart (1751-1791) is actually listed on the Rev Bartelot's pedigree as the son of William and Sarah and he gives a faint dotted line leading to a list of one line of descendancy from him - via his son William Dart (1782-1860), through his son Levi Dart (1822-1895) who married Esther Oliver, and onto his son Charles Dart (1847-1934) who marries Mary Stone (1850-1894).
The baptism of James in 1751 however gives a big anomaly which I have so far been unable to resolve as records suggest that Sarah actually died and was buried at Stinsford (her home parish) on 2nd Mar 1745/6. This record is then followed in 1750 by the marriage of William Dart (who is recorded as being from Dalwood in Devon) to Mary Presly at St Peters Church in Dorchester. This would be fine except for the fact that both these records pr-date the baptism of James.(1) He was buried at Stinsford on 5th Oct 1791. Mary nee Christopher now a widow lived until she was 74 when she died at Bockhampton (a hamlet within the parish of Stinsford) and was buried with her husband at Stinsford on 12th Sep 1833.

This would be fine except for the fact that both these records pre-date the baptism of James. (1) He was buried at Stinsford on 5th Oct 1791. Mary nee Christopher his widow lived until she was 74 when she died at Bockhampton and was buried with her husband at Stinsford on 12th Sep 1833.
William is listed at Fordington in 1758 as being a labourer and eligible to serve in the Dorset Militia. The only other record I can locate is for William's burial at St Georges Church in Fordington on 19th April 1774 which also appears on the Rev Bartelot's pedigree chart..
William DART alias DARK & Mary READER
The second Family

If we return to the Rev Bartelot's pedigree . It also lists two children of William DART of Fordington by his second marriage to Mary. These at least are readily identifiable: -

    (1) William Dart (1765-1820) bap Fordington 25th Dec 1765. William volunteered to serve for 3 years in the Dorset Regiment of Militia at a meeting held at the Kings Arms in Dorchester on 19th April 1788. Unusually this was a meeting of the 'Wareham' rather than the 'Dorchester' Sub Division who normally met at the 'Drax Arms' in Beer Regis but for some reason chose Dorchester for this particular meeting. We are lucky in that the Minutes of the Dorchester sub division for that year are missing whereas those for Wareham have survived and these inform us that William DARK, a 21 year old bachelor who was 5 feet 6 inches tall and a labourer of Forthington, volunteered at the meeting to serve as a substitute for Thomas Talbot a cordwainer of Wareham who had been chosen in the ballot.

'Bartelot' in his pedigree confirms that William DART was 'part of the Dorset Militia when they were sent to Ireland to suppress the Rebellion in 1798 and at Carrick-on-Suir . I know that the Dorset Militia was certainly mobilized and sent to Ireland then as Elizabeth's son Thomas Christopher went with them and he returned with the unit, being demobilized in 1799.

William clearly also returned to Fordington as he married Martha READER (1783-1836) in St Georges church on 13th December 1803. Bartelot says that she was of Honiton Clyst and her father was, a Captain in the Royal Navy but I have not been able to locate where this information comes from and such a marriage seems to be out of step for William who is the son of an agricultural labourer. I would have thought she was more likely to have been the daughter of James & Martha READER and baptised at Upwey on 31st Jan 1783. It's difficult to tell as most of Devon's parish registers still have to be transcribed but no baptism has so far been recorded by the church of later day saints for a Martha Reader in Devon around 1782. Another reason I think the Rev Bartelot might have got her origins wrong is the fact that William & Martha were clearly poor. On the 15th Nov 1817 Martha was convicted of stealing turnips , presumably because she needed food to feed her husband and 2 surviving children, and as she could not pay the fine of 20 shillings she spent a calendar month in Dorchester Prison.

William died at the age of 55 and was buried at Fordington on 13th Feb 1820. Martha was also buried there, on 25th Sep 1836 aged 54. Although the pedigree lists two children they also had a third that died in infancy:-

(1.1) Mary Dart (1806-1871) bap F 17th Aug 1806 she married Jonathan FUDGE at Fordington on 31st Aug 1831 and they raised a family of 4 children there until Jonathan's daeth in 1847. Mary lived until she was 65 being buried at Fordington on 23rd March 1871
      (1.2) Elizabeth Dart (1811-1812) bap F 27th May 1811 and buried at F 13th Sep 1812
(1.3) Eleanor Dart (1814-1865) bap F 31st Jan 1814 as shown in the pedigree she married Thomas GROVES (1811-1871) at F on 17th June 1833 and they had a large family one of which was Walter Edwin Groves. By the age of 24 Walter was already on the path to success and prosperous enough to have secured the position of Clerk to the Dorset County Hospital and be living on Fordington Hill in better accommodation than his parents who lived in the notorious Mill Street in Fordington. In 1881 he married Jemima Yalland a native of Loddiswill in Devon and by 1891 he had qualified as an accountant and moved again to live at 'Valetta' at number 4 Icen Way in Fordington. Walter by 1895 had been elected an as auditor for the Corporation of Dorchester and died at his home on 6th may 1925 leaving an estate of £616.1s.5d. Walter & Jemima produced a son also named Walter Edwin Groves who later became an Architect.

    (2) Mary Dart (1768-NK) bap Fordington 26th Dec 1768. She married Peter WEST at Fordington on 30th April 1791. They settled at Stinsford raising a family of 6 children that I know of, some of which died in infancy. Mary West died at Bockhamton in Stinsford at the age of 78 on 2nd Dec 1846.
As I stated in the section above we only have the one suitable burial for a William DART and that is on 19th April 1774 as shown in the Rev Bartelot's chart. So everything fits apart from James DART's baptism being very late in 1751.
Charles DART & Ann READ
The third Family

In 1771 we have another family arrive in Fordington when Charles DART (bur.1802) marries Ann READ (bur.1827) in St Georges Church on 30th May 1771.

Charles DART appears as a witness at the wedding of Samuel Garland and Ann Casher at Fordington on 26th Oct 1795 and his name appears on the Fordington Militia List for 11th Jan 1796 when his name was crossed off because he had 7 children to support. He also appears in the land tax returns for Fordington as the occupier of meadow land owned by William Clavill in returns from 1797 to 1800. He and his wife had the following children

    (1) Ann Dart bap F 16th Feb 1772; she married Edward Keats at F 20th May 1793. Ann was buried at F on 7th Nov 1839 aged 68 and left a Willproved 20 Nov 1840.
    (2) Charles Dart bap F 15th Jan 1775
    (3) Elizabeth Dart bap F 5th April 1778
    (4) Mary Dart bap F 27th Aug 1780
    (5) Martha Nightingale Dart bap F 14th Dec 1783
    (6) Sarah Dart bap F 3rd Oct 1784
    (7) Maria Dart buried at Fordington on 26th Dec 1787
    (8) Maria Dart bap F 26th Dec 1792
    (9) Joseph Dart bap F 6th Jan 1799. Joseph married Ann ALLEN at Fordington 1st Nov 1819. He was probably the Joseph DART a Carpenter who was charged with rioting 8th Jan 1821 when he said he was married with no children and aged 26?
Charles Dart senior was buried at F on 20 Jan 1802 and Ann at F aged 76 on 4th Mar 1827
Genealogical Notes:-

(1)
It's possible that this is an older Sarah and that Sarah Dart nee Perham died later but there is no record of such a death. William's marriage to Mary Presly also predates James baptism. This could be a different William but again no evidence for separate existance has so far come to light. James could have been born earlier say 1746 but the only evidence we have for his age is a Militia Record which states that he was 23 in 1776 which gives a birth date of cica 1753. Whilst clearly not correct it suggests that he was born around the time he was baptised rather than earlier.

(2) William DART (1782-1860) & Susannah Purchase (1780-1852) had 9 children:-
    (1) John Dart (1802-1876) He married three times initially to Elizabeth Oxford (1799-1842) on 7th July 1825 at Piddlehinton where they settled and by whom he had 8 children 7 of which were baptised at Piddlehinton between 1826 and 1837; the last child John being baptised at Stinsford after they moved to live at Lower Bockhampton, a hamlet in the parish. Elizabeth was returned to Piddlehinton for burial on 23rd Nov 1842. John's second wife was Elizabeth Warren (1806-1857) whom he also married at Piddlehinton on 22nd June 1843 by whom he had a daughter Mary at Stinsford circa 1845 (no baptism?). Elizabeth nee Warren appears to have been buried at Poole on 15th July 1857. His third marriage was to Mary West (1810-1891) a native of Christchurch in Hampshire at All Saints church in Dorchester on 29th May 1859. They moved to live at Binfield in Berkshire where John died in the 3rd quarter of 1876

    (2) Sarah Dart (1803-1857) She married John Hardy (1803-1866) at Stinsford on 17th Nov 1825 and was buried there 23 July 1857. John Hardy being buried at Dorchester Civic Cemetery on 23rd Oct 1866

    (3) James Dart (1809-1860) He married Barbara Hatcher (1806-1853) at Holy Trinity Church in Dorchester on 17th July 1832 and raised a family of 7 children at Fordington being buried there on 9th Mar 1860. He was pre-deceased by Barbara who was buried at fordington on 12th july 1853

    (4) Rebecca Dart (1811-1890) She had two illegitimate children (Emily bap 7 Feb 1836 and Frederick bap 11 Jan 1852). In 1881 she was living at 22 Grove Buildings with her unmarried son Frederick and working as a charwoman. She was buried at Fordington on 28th May 1890

    (5) Charles Dart (1813-1901) He married Elizabeth Grant (1818-1852) at Stinsfird on 9th Jun 1834 and lived at West Stafford in Dorset where they had 2 children before they emigrated to Adelaide in Australia. Mary Ann their 2nd daughter died on the voyage out to Australia on the ship Plantina but Elizabeth gave birth to many other children after their arrival. Charles was buried on 13th May 1901 at Victoria Australia and Elizabeth in Landergrove South Australia in 1852

    (6) Maria Dart (1815-NK) Nothing known

    (7) Isaac Dart (1817-1889) Described as an agricultural labouerer and also at times a groom he married Jane Legg (1813-1879) at Stinsford on 29th Oct 1838 and they raised a family of 4 children at Fordington and Woodsford in Dorset before his death in the 1st quarter of 1889.

    (8) Charlotte Dart (1820-1821) She died in infancy being buried at Stinsford on 1st April 1821

    (9) Levi Dart (1822-1895) he married Esther Oliver (1823-1894) at Stinsford on 24th April 1843. He worked as an agricultural labourer and later as a carter raising a family of 4 children in Stinsford.
(3). During research we looked at another William and Mary Dart Family living in the area as shown below, but have not so far been able to link them directly into the families who lived at Dorchester and Fordington.

William DART and Mary SYMONDS
of Steeple, Tyneham, East Lulworth and Wareham

William DART said to have been from Winfrith in Dorset married Mary SYMONDS a spinster in her home parish of Steeple in Dorset on 8th Aug 1755. There is no trace of William however in Winfrith. He know from research that he was buried at St Martins church in Wareham on 29th Aug 1762. Mary his bride was also buried in Wareham but at Lady St Marys church many years later on 2nd March 1803.

William and Mary were sojourners living where he could find work. They had 4 children:-

    (1) Joyce Dart (1755-1775) bap at Tyneham in Dorset 12th Oct 1755. She died unmarried and was buried at St Martins church in Wareham on 7th May 1775.

    (2) William Dart (1756-1830 bap at East Lulworth 24th Apr 1757. He married Mary Hodder at Lady St Marys church in Wareham on 27th Feb 1782 They had three children shown below. William died in the Almshouse at Wareham on 15th Oct 1830 when his age was given as being 74

2.1) Joice (Joyce) Dart bap Lady St March church Wareham 20th Jan 1782. Died unmarried and buried there 23rd Jan 1803
(2.2) Elizabeth Young Dart bap Lady St Mary church Wareham 24th Sep 1786. she married Abraham Fancy at Lady St Mary Church on 17th April 1810.

Chronological listing of all records located in the three Dorchester Parishes; Fordington and Stinsford with relationship notes

14 Apr 1694    Joseph PERHAM alias DARK & Jane VIVIHAM alias HOGGARD were married at Holy Trinity Church Dorchester

30 May 1737  William DARK married Sarah PEDHAM at Stinsford

23 Oct 1737    Julian daughter of William & Sarah DARK baptised (of Stinsford) [1st child from marriage of William DARK to Sarah PEDHAM on 30 May 1737 at Stinsford]

02 Dec 1739    Jeney daughter of William & Sarah DART baptised at Fordington [2nd child from marriage of William DARK to Sarah PEDHAM on 30 May 1737 at Stinsford. The marriage and baptism of their 1st child were registered at Stinsford and the family then settled in Fordington where a different parish clerk would have recorded this baptism and presumably heard the surname as DART rather than DARK]

29 Apr 1744   Elizabeth daughter of William DART and Sarah his wife baptised 29th April 1744 at Fordington [3rd child from marriage of William DARK to Sarah PEDHAM on 30 May 1737 at Stinsford - Elizabeth DART / DARK married William (Trask) Christopher at Stinsford 25th Jan 1762]

02 Mar 1745/6 Sarah DARCK buried at Stinsford [This could be the death of Sarah nee Pedham who married in the parish, but Wm and Sarah lived at Fordington and appear to have another son James bap there on 11th Apr 1751. She could of course have been returned to nearby Stinsford for burial. As Elizabeth Dart (29 Apr 1744) above married William Trask Christopher and James Dart married Mary Christopher who were both from the same family I have assumed this is not the case and she is possibly another older relation still living in Stinsford.

06 Nov 1750   William DARK of Dalwood married Mary PRESLY of West Niton [i.e. West Knighton] at St Peters Church Dorchester (PR) [Note:- Dalwood was a chapelry of Stockland in Fordington Liberty, originally in Dorset, Dalwood was transferred to the Archdeaconry and Diocese of Exeter in 1836 and added to Devon by Act of Parliament in 1842. I do not have access to parish registers for Dalwood but the burial transcription on the OPC site suggests quite a large DARK family in this parish so others may also have come to Dorchester around this time. William & Mary would have married in Dorchester because it’s close to Mary’s parish of West Knighton (2 miles from Dorchester) and she was probably working there as it was the major town for employment in the area.

They do not seem to have settled immediately in Dorchester as they had a child Elonor baptised at West Stafford (just over a mile from Dorchester) which is very close to Mary’s parish of West Knighton in Dec 1755. If this is the William DART of Fordington in the pedigree it's interesting to note that his son bap in 1765 went on to marry and name one of his children Elenor. They may then have moved again as there is a baptism for a Thomas son of a William & Mary Dark bap at Holwell on 6th Feb 1760 and possibly returned to Fordington for baptisms in 1765 and 1768 see below. Information however is sparse so difficult to be sure this is all the same family
