Frederick John Cleall was born in 1840 at Poole, Dorset. His parents were Henry Lance Cleall and Caroline nee Stacey. When Frederick was about ten, the family moved to Swanage.

In 1868, Frederick married Harriet Lance who sadly passed away during childbirth the same year. He later married Emma Rosser in 1872 who he had met on the beach when she was visiting from Bristol. Together they had 11 children.

Frederick's occupation was a house decorator but he enjoyed painting the scenes around Purbeck and particularly Swanage where he lived. A collection of his delightful paintings can be seen in the Swanage Town Hall.

Frederick died in 1924 and is buried in Northbrook Cemetery, Swanage with his wife Emma and two of his children.
