by Richard Smith

1889 - 1915 Robert HARDY born at Wool in 1843 son of Thomas a farm labourer and his wife Tabitha Hardy. Married Ann STANFORD at Wyke Regis in 1865 and when she died in 1886, he then married Sarah E COOPER at Wareham in 1887. In 1861 was living with his parents at the now deserted village of Tyneham working as a farm labourer. By 1881 and 1891 he was a news vendor and from 1889 the Town Crier and a bill poster - a role often linked to the Town Crier. He died in 1919 in Swanage.

1920 - 1939 [maybe longer] - William H G HARDY born at Swanage in 1893 son of Robert and Sarah Hardy above. In 1911 aged 17 he was working as a postman living with his Uncle Walter HARDY, but is listed in a trade directory for 1919 as bill poster and Town Crier. In 1939 he was a bill poster (and ARP Warden) and likely still Town Crier as these posts were often combined. He died in Poole in 1976.

1987 - 1995 ? Ronald Derrick FINCHAM ( k/as Derrick ) born at Chepstow in 1927 son of John and Miriam Fincham. Married Patricia Odger at Poole in 1974. Worked in the atomic energy industry at Winfrith and became Town Crier when he retired. Was second in the Town Crier World Championships in 1987 and 3rd in 1993 - he died at Swanage in December 2001.
