EXCERPT from 1895 description

KINGTON MAGNA is a parish and village, in Redlane hundred, Shaftesbury petty sessional division, Wincanton union and county court district, diocese of Salisbury, archdeaconry of Dorset and rural deanery of Shaftesbury first portion;  it is 6 miles south-east from Wincanton, 7 north-west from Shaftesbury and 4 south-west from Gillingham railway station.  The church of All Saints was restored in 1862 by the Rev. William Dugdale:  it is built of stone, with square tower containing clock and peal of 4 bells:  the church is cruciform, in the Early English style:  the two transepts have originally been side chapels;  the chancel arch is Norman, and possibly a remnant of the original building;  the seats are all free, and will hold 400 people;  there is a very good organ;  the eastern window was presented by the late rector, the Rev. W.L. Smith:  there are five stained windows;  a west window has recently been placed in the church by Miss Dugdale, to the memory of her father.  The register dates from the year 1680.  The living is a rectory, yearly value, 592 pounds, with residence, in the gift of and held by the Rev. John Smith, first-class prizeman of St. Bess.  The rectorial glebe is chiefly let in allotments for the benefit of the poor of the parish.  Here is a chapel for Primitive Methodists.  Glove making and brick making are carried on here.  G.D. Wingfield Dibgy esq. is the principal landowner.  The land is principally in pasture.  The soil is loam and clay; subsoil, clay and stone.  The area is 1,923 acres;  rateable value, 4,515 pounds;  and the population in 1871 was 516.

NYLAND is a tithing, 2 miles west;  Bye, 1 mile north-west;  Hartmoor, 1 mile north;  Wadlin, 1.5 miles north-west;  Hurdick, 1.5 miles north;  and Kingsmead, 2 miles north.
