Consequent upon ‘An act to provide for public Elementary Education in England and Wales’ passed 9th August, 1870, the old School Room (part of the Rectory premises) hitherto used for the Parish was reported as insufficient, and increased accommodation was ordered to be provided. Accordingly on Nov. 19, 1870, the Landowners of the Parish, at a meeting Summoned for the purpose agreed unanimously to contribute a rate of ?2sin the £ towards the Expenses of a new School. At a subsequent meeting of occupiers, held Nov. 26, 1870, it was agreed unanimously to contribute a rate of 6d in the £, ?as so much of it should be required. Plans for the new School were prepared by ?Mr Benson Architect of Yeovil, the committee accepted the tender of W. Kingman of Lydlinch as contractor, and the building was formally opened for use on the 25th March 1874.
