He married here to Marianne JOSLYN the daughter of a chimney sweep John JOSLYN and his wife Ann and had been baptised at FStG Church on 3rd Feb 1820 as Mary Ann JOSLING. By the June 1841 Census John had moved to King Street in Bedminster near Bristol in Somerset with his 2 younger brothers Jacob and James probably in search of work (Note:- The 1841 Census gives adult ages in 5 year age bands and both his brothers are recorded as aged 15 i.e. aged between 15 and 19). His wife Mary Ann Beavis was staying with her parents. By 1851 John is decribed as a Hellier by trade and living in Bedminster at Clarence Place with Mary Ann. They had no children and were living in 1881 in Bristol in Queens square when John was a Foreman. They returned to Fordington however living at 2 Ettrick Place off King Street in 1891. Mary Ann BEAVIS nee JOSLYN (1820-1893) died there and was buried at St Georges Church in Fordington on 8th Feb 1893 aged 73. After her death John BEAVIS returned to live in Bristol at 33 Woodborough Street where he died on 25th March 1904 described as a retired malster's assistant. [Note:- Charles Amor (1818-1896) was the 2nd child from the marriage of Richard AMOR (1781-1857) to Hannah [Anna] CASE [nee RENDELL] (1793-1858) at Bridport on 01 Oct 1816. Follow Link for information about Charles & Charlotte's Removal from Fordington on 14th Nov 1838. Clearly this was unsuccessful as they appear on the June 1841 Census living in Wareham St in Fordington ; Charles aged 25 (i.e. 1816?) a Labourer and not born in Dorset? and Charlotte aged 24 (born c 1817) born in Dorset. In the Mar 1851 Census however they are living in Grove Buildings which are situated in West Fordington, Charles is now described as being 33 years old (i.e. born c1818) a stone cutter by trade. and born in Bridport Dorset which is correct. Charlotte's described as being aged 32 (born c1819) and born in London (borough unknown) Clearly in the 1841 Census it was Charlotte who was not born in Dorset not Charles. Charles Amor was admitted to the Dorset County Hospital March 1859 when his age was given as being 41. Charlotte died between 1851 and 1869 but I have been unable to locate her burial. .

Charles remarried on 4th May 1869 to Mary Jane LODER at Christchurch in West Fordington when he is described as a widower and a stonemason and his father Richard Amor a Cooper by trade. They had a daughter born at Dorchester named after her mother i,e, Mary Jane AMOR during 4th qtr 1872 Ref 5a/343. I have not located a baptism for her. They are all in the 1891 Census still living at Pease Lane Charles recorded as a mason. Charles Amor was buried at the Civic Cemetery in Dorchester (Grave ref 2-195) on 15th May 1896 aged 80 years [actually 78] when it was recorded that he was a former Railway Labourer. His second wife Mary Jane AMOR and his daughter of the same name are both buried at the Civic Cemetery although they seem to have lost their dates of burial in theor index so only enter the surname for a full listing. Mary Jane his widow died aged 76 and is in grave 2-120 and their daughter Mary Jane aged 26 in grave 2-119 suggesting they were succesive burials. Only the daughters death is recorded at the GRO aged 26 4th qtr 1898 Dorchester District Ref 5a 193.

    (1) Louisa Vincent (1840-1922) Bap FStG 14th May 1840 : In 1861 Louisa aged 22 and single was working as a Servant at 49 South street for the Solicitor George F Andrews . On Christmas day 1864 she married at St Mary's church in St Marylebone London to James FEACEY a coppersmith. I think however that this is a clerical error as they registered the birth of their 5th child as James Vincent during the 1st qtr 1846 (GRO Ref 8/56) He is also called James aged 5 in the 1851 Census and James age 15 a Shoemaker in 1861. By the 13th August 1867 when married at Chrustchurch in West Fordington James Vincent was already living in Holy Trinity Parish in Dorchester. He married Emily CARTER the daughter of Robert CARTER a gardener and by 1871 they were living in Pease Lane Dorchester with 2 children. Follow Link for more information about this family.

They had a daughter Lilian c1886 and were living at 8 Trinity Road Southampton in 1891. By 1901 Henry had retired on a Police Pension. Initially living in Millers Close he married here to Bathsheba the daughter of a tailor by trade called George GREEN (1793-1862) by his wife Mary BATT (1795-1858). Bathsheba his bride was bap at St Peters Church in Dorchester on 8th Sep 1822 but gives her place of birth as West Fordington. They were living at Grove Buildings in West Fordington in Apr 1843 when they had an illegitimate daughter Julia baptised at St Georges Church in East Fordington. After Marriage they moved around Dorchester according to where John could obtain work and they could afford accommodation. This resulted in the baptism of their children in four different churches as shown below. By 1851 John was working as a stone mason but in the mid 1850's he contracted Phthsis (T.B) and died at the young age of 35 at Bell Street. He may have been buried at All Saints Church as records are incomplete after about March that year (new burials were supposed to be sent to the Civic Cemetery but after some confusion some burials continued where family graves/vaults existed right up to 1869 and a few up to 1881). Civic records are also incomplete but suggest that there are 46 unknown burials there prior to their records which start in Jan 1857. By 1881 Bathsheba had moved her family to live in Lambeth London where she was employed as a Housekeeper living at 15 Blyth Terrace. She died in Lambeth aged 59 in the last quarter 1881].

Records concerning this couple appear to be full of errors. For some reason Eve for a long time after her marriage appears to have been recorded as Ann Blandamer. We can be sure of this because Eve was born in the tiny parish of Leigh in Dorset and the family is recorded in the 1851 Census as Robert Blandimore [i.e. Blandamer] a Thatcher by trade (like his father) born at Fordington and living at Fordington Hill with Ann his wife born at Leigh with thier 2 year old son Charles. Also when Charles was baptised at St Georges Church in 1849 he was usefully given the full name of Henry Charles Dewland Blandamer which includes Eve's maiden name which is also not common. There are no other Robert Blandamer's at this date. They are still at Fordington Hill in the same house in the 1861 Census with his wife Ann, now recorded as Eve, born at Leigh with 4 of their children. Eve returned to using her proper Christian name immediately after the 1851 Census as per the baptisms of her other 7 children. She died at Fordington Hill and was buried at FstG on 8th May 1866 followed by her husband Robert who died at the age of 54 and was buried at FStG on 11th Oct 1869 :-

    (1) Henry Charles Dewland (1848-1876) born in 1st quarter of 1848 (GRO Ref 8/55) and recorded as Henry Charles Blandamer, but in the parish registers as Henry Charles Dewland Blandamer the son of Robert and Ann Blandamer baptised at FStG on 10th May 1849. In both the 1851 and 1861 Census returns he is simply recorded as Charles Blandamer. He enlisted in the Army joining the 2nd battalion of the Scots Fusillier Guards as a private (Regtl number 1700) but does not appear to have enjoyed good health. In 1871 he is still unmarried and in the Grenadier Guards Hospital at Rochester Row in Westminster and on the 29 Oct 1872 he came before the medical board, dischaged and returned to Dorchester where he died in the first quarter of 1876 (GRO 5a/238) being buried at FStG on 24 Jan 1876.

It has been the custom for the Ordnance storekeeper (Mr. Stewart) to draw a check [cheque] on the branch of the Bank of England weekly for the amount of wages to be paid to the persons employed in the Gun-wharf and dependencies. This Sum has sometimes been as small as £20, and seldom exceeded £150; but once a quarter the salaries of officers, pensions, and other calls are added, and these, as the 28th ult., made the amount ordered to. be paid £1,130. Charlier had the confidential duty ever since be joined 'the Portsmouth establishment of drawing these sums from the bank; in fact the check [cheque] drawn was worded, "Pay Mr .Charlier," &c, who was invariably attended by a confidential messenger named Sheppard, with bags to contain and carry the cash from the bank to the Gun-wharf.

On the Friday midday the two were sent as usual to the bank, but when opposite, Charlier suddenly said to. Sheppard, "Oh! Sheppard, run down to Nanca's office, and tell them to send in their quarterly account to-day if possible; "to which the messenger replied, "Shall I come back to you at the bank? "No," said - Charlier, "you needn't come all the way back; you go round by the walls, and meet me; if I'm there before you I'll wait for you, and if you are there first you can wait for me." Suspecting nothing dishonest in this order of his superior, Sheppard went on his errand and Charlier went into the bank, where he obtained for the check [cheque] £600 in sovereigns, £30. in half-soverigns, £20. in silver, and £480. in notes' (the` numbers of which are all known and stopped), and made off.

That he had contemplated the robbery for some time is suspected from the fact of his having been to the hairdresser's in the High street, and asked him what would best disguise him - a subject he repeatedly recurred to; and about ten days ago he took away a formidable pair of ' whiskers and moustache of dark hair which would certainly disguise him if well adjusted, for he is a small made young man of thin features and scant stature. His family is very respectable, he is married, and has two children; his salary was £190 per annum and a house rent free in the Gun wharf, and he ranked as second class clerk.

On Monday, he was brought up before the Portsmouth bench of magistrates, his apprehension having been promptly effected as detailed in the evidence given below. A vast amount of interest was evinced to see the prisoner in the disguise, in which he was apprehended, consisting of the complete dress of an elderly widow woman---black gown, black bonnet, veil to match, widow's weeds, false hair, and an antique pair of spectacles. The. deception was very complete, and those who. had before known him in the highly responsible position in which he was placed - had some difficulty in recognising him.

Mr. Alexander Stewart, storekeeper in the Gun wharf under the War Department, deposed: The person at the bar, in a widow's dress, although much disguised, I recognise as George Joseph Nathaniel Charlier, second clerk under me in the Gun Wharf. He has been there since December, 1847. On Friday, at half past twelve p.m. I gave him a check on the. Branch Bank of England, in Portsmouth for £1,130. The prisoner left the office with the messenger, Joseph Sheppard,. whom I always sent with him to carry the bag. He did not return in the usual time, and, in consequence, I sent the first clerk, Mr. Edwards, to the bank, to ascertain the cause of the delay, and I also gave some instructions to the police.

In reply to Mr. Ford, witness said Mr. Charlier had up to the present time maintained a very good character. Joseph- Sheppard, the office-keeper, deposed to going with the prisoner, as usual, to carry the money-bag, and when arriving at the bank to the latter saying, "Sheppard, you are to go to Mr. Nance's, and tell, them to, send in their' quarterly account," and that he was to meet prisoner at the Gun-wharf gates. Witness did so, but after waiting at the Gun Wharf gates some time, prisoner did not arrive.

Mr. Christopher Edwin Theakston, cashier at the bank, deposed to the payment of the cheque.

Mr. William Leggatt; superintendent of the Portsmouth police, deposed to coming, from information he had received, to Petersfield on Saturday, and, at the Dolphin Inn, there, learning that a widow lady and a young lady had been there the previous evening, and had posted on to Farnham. Proceeding there, he found they had gone on to Guildford, thence to Esher, and thence to London. They had left the carriage in Piccadilly, and here witness lost trace of them for the time. From information, however, he went on Sunday afternoon to a coffee-house in Fenchurch-street, called the Leopard, and said to the landlady, "a widow and a young lady slept here last night." She replied they had, that the widow lady was unwell, apparently troubled in mind. `Witness said he was sorry, and would call again to see them. He then went into the street, and procured the aid' of a London policeman, in the event of assistance being needed. He then again went in, and said he wished to see the ladies. The landlady said he could not see them unless he sent up his card and name. he then told the landlady who he was, and he went up stairs with the London constable, finding the prisoner in his present widow's garb, with the exception that the bonnet was off, and his female companion. They pretended not to know him, but he told them his business, and addressing the prisoner by name, asked him if a black leather bag in the room contained the £1,130 he had stolen. He hesitated but at length said the principal part of the gold and silver were there. The notes he drew out of a pocket of the dress he had on. Witness counted the notes and found them to tally with the description of them given by Mr THEAKSTON. The coin consisted of 583 sovereigns, 60 half sovereigns and £15. 14s 6d. in silver, making a total of £1,108 14s 6d which witness produced. He also found the pair of whiskers which he produced. Prisoner ultimately said to his companion, a girl belonging to Portsmouth, named Elizabeth Jones "Betsy I have deceived you". He also said to the witness "Until a few minutes since she did not know but the money was my own. I told her I had Ł1,400 in the Bank. On my telling her how I had got it she said "Well I will not betray you, but I will not go any further with you". Witness then took the prisoner into custody and brought him by train to Portsmouth.

The prisoner said in a firm tone he had nothing to say in his defence and he was committed to the sessions on the charge of Embezzlement. Against the girl Jones no charge was preferred.

Reynolds's Newspaper (London, England), Sunday, April 6, 1856; Issue 295. ] A later account of his trial in The York Herald (York, England), Saturday, April 19, 1856; pg. 11; Issue 4354. 19th Century British Library Newspapers: Part II records that he was sentenced to 5 years penal servitude.

Robert was a mason by trade and by 1830 they had settled to live in Powerstock where Robert had also been offerd the job of Sexton. No doubt he used his skills to effect repairs where necessary to the church. Thier 1st son 'Norris Gale' was privatekly baptised at Powerstock on Dec 26th 1830. He was later formally admitted to the church before the congregation on 3rd April 1831. William grew up in Powerstock working as an agricultural labourer and was still living with his parents at Gill House in Powerstock aged 15 in March 1851. Selina HYDE(1839-1913) was the 13th child from the marriage of John HYDE to Rebecca FUDGE at FStg on 7th Oct 1817;

By 1871 they have moved to nearby Holloway Row in Fordington and William is confirmed as still being employed on the Militia Staff as Drummer. Living with them is Selina's aged widowed mother Rebecca HYDE.By 1881 they are back in Mill Street a very poor and unhealthy place to live. Despite this William and Selina are still there in April 1891. William died at No.9 Holloway Row at the age og 66 being buried at FStG Church on 28th May 1900. Edith EDWARDS age 47 a spinster a servant X her mark resident F father Thomas EDWARDS a labourer witnesses Eli Riggs X his mark and Elizabeth Peters

Note:- His father James CHRISTOPHER (d.1793) gave his parish as Portisham when he married by special licence to Mary DUNFORD in her home parish of Puncknowle in Dorset on 20 July 1791. James was not baptised at Portesham and I have not located his ancestry. Their son Thomas CHRISTOPHER (1791-1857) was baptised there 4 months later on 20th November 1791. I cannot trace any further children from this marriage as the family moved to Cheselbourne where James appears to have been buried on 19th July 1793. Thomas grew up at Dewlish about a mile south east of Cheselbourne and married a widow Margaret SPRANKLEN (1776-1856) in Mappowder on 18th March 1817. He had a daughter Maria by her who was baptised in Puddletown on 31st December 1817. (She later married a George Redhead in Southampton 26/9/1854). Thomas and Margaret were living in Cheselbourne in both the 1841 and 1851 Census returns together with Margaret's brother Angel SNOOK, when both men were described as agricultural labourers. Margaret died and was buried at Chesselbourne on 4th June 1856 when her age was given as 80.

This is therefore Thomas CHRISTOPHER'S 2nd marriage to Edith EDWARDS who was 18 years his junior. Edith was the daughter of Thomas and Grace EDWARDS and baptised at Compton Vallence in Dorset on 26th July 1807 [CLDS Film 1279493]. Compton Vallence was often referred to as East Compton. Unfortunately Thomas CHRISTOPHER died in 1857 being buried at Dorchester's Civic Cemetery on 27th March when his age was given as 63. Edith now a widow gives her birth place as East Compton in both the 1861 and 1871 Census returns and continued to work in Dorchester, in 1861 as a house servant at the Wood and Stone Inn in Durngate Street and in her old age in 1871 as a charwoman living at number 5 Greenway Yard in Dorchester. By 1881 she was too old and infirm to work but was granted a place in Chubb's Almshouses in North Square when her age was given as being 78. I have not located her death.

[Note:- Mark TILLEY (1836-1920) was the 3rd child of William TILLEY a Shoemaker but the 1st child by his 2nd wife Elizabeth nee Haskett. Eliza TAYLOR (1831-1900) was baptised on 3rd June 1832 at Bruisyard in Suffolk the daughter and 6th of 11 children of Samuel & Susan Taylor. Her father had moved his family to live in Dorset prior to June 1841 where he initially settled in Winterbourne Monkton working as a Drillman ( i.e. operating a seed drill on a farm near the turnpike gate). By April 1851 however he appears to have set up his own business in Fordington manufacturing seed drills and Eliza was living with her family working as a dressmaker. After marriage Mark set up their own business in Trinity Street Dorchester describing himself in 1861 as a Cordwainer journeyman and Elizabeth continued as a dressmaker. Her father however was becoming quite prosperous and is living in King Street Fordington in 1861 described as a Farmer of 124 acres employing 7 labourers and boysas well as a Machinist employing 2 carpenters, 3 blacksmiths and 4 apprentices. Harrods Street Directory for Dorchester for the year 1865 records their business as "TAYLOR and SONS" stove and grate manufacturers, blacksmiths & brightsmith operating from 8 High East Street and Fordington. It also has a printed advertisement which confirms that his Seed Drill business had also continued, expanded and was manufacturing from Trinity Street in Dorchester which may be why Mark set his own business up there.

By 1871 Mark's father William had retired and handed over the running of his business at 42 South Street to him and his family. They were still there in 1881 with his brother Matthew Henry Tilley having established a Watch & Jewellery business at No. 50 South Street. They had six children as shown below:-
